Wood and Plater Pal

So I made a pig and decided to be crazy (thanks to Ingy) and instead of painting its pink like a normal one, I covered in in bacon strips that I cut out of paper. This took a long time but in the end was worth it and came out really really well. I used cardboard, wire and paint for the nose, eyes and ears. This took the least amount of time and was the easiest to make. I  decided no to make the nose or ears out of bacon because you dont get bacon from either of those things so I just painted them pink.
For wood I decided to make a house for my pig. I was suppose to work with Silmar but since he hasnt been here I did it by myself and it was hard. I ran in to a lot of problems on the way and didnt really like the whole wood thing. In the end my wood house was just basically a box on the bottom and then a triangle on top. I asked Joe for help and everything worked out good in the end and now I like it.

Blog on Clay

I made a butterfly out of clay and each wing had a different texture and was shaped a little differently to give it extra style. This one combined both the texture and the animal projects assigned in one. I then made a pot that started out on the poetry wheel and ended with me shaping it because the I couldn't get the right shape on the wheel. I then added texture and design to that pot as well. This piece combined texture and texture and what ever you want. The last piece I made was just something that I just shaped and put together. It was the one piece that I did what ever I wanted on so I did all the assigned projects and more.
My process during the whole time was just make what ever comes to mind and go with it. That is how I made the butterfly and then the jar type thing at the end. My experiment went well also except for on the pottery wheel. I had a lot of trouble on the wheel because I couldnt get the shape right or it kept breaking. I tried it a few more times and then got the bottom shape on the wheel then took it off and shaped the sides of it myself.

Brainstorm on Plaster Project

  • Make a cube and then chip away at it to make a sculpture
  • Make a mask and then decorate it
  • Make the balloon plaster machete thing and then make it in to a animal

Is it Sculpture or Paper?

This is a sculpture. My main idea was to make a boat and then float it in the big tubs of water people were using to make their paper and to see if the small pieces of the paper left behind would have any effect on my boat. I first made a paper boat which was like doing origami, and then put it in the water and let it do its thing. It floated fine and didnt sink at all. I then took the Starbucks Label off my drink, I was having that morning, and decided to make a flag for my boat and see if that would make any difference. It did. The flag was too heavy and off balance so the whole boat just fell over. After that I decided to make my boat pretty and added remains of other peoples paper scraps and stuck them on to the side of my boat.

This is a piece of paper that I found and thought was really cool. It is very thick and has a lot of extra pieces of random things in it. I really like how it is different colors and has such distinct other pieces in it.

Sketch to Sculpture

The main difference between my sketch and my sculpture is that the sculpture is 3D. This means that you can touch, move and see all angles of the sculpture. The sketch is only pencil on paper which you can only see because I would of only drew the things I saw in the picture. The sculpture also had a lot more detail because I cut out the designs of the bricks but in the picture I didnt.

The process I took to make each of these things was also very different. When making the sketch all I did was sit in front of the it a look up and down between my paper and the wall and draw what I saw. This took about 10 minuets and wasn't very hard. The sculpture on the other hand took about a week and I am still not done. I first had to cut out every piece of the main wall and glue them together, then I had to go back up to the wall and look at all the details of the bricks. After that I craved out each brick and then painted it to make it look more realistic. As you can see the process is very different and the sculpture takes a lot longer to make then the sketch.

Looking Forward

As of right now I am working on a card for my mom because her birthday is tomorrow and I thought she would really like it if I made her a very arty/homemade-type of card or anything because she is all about homemade things. One thing I really enjoyed doing was using the charcoal and just drawing. I also really like spray painting. I dont know how well those two different materials work together but I want to try it out and just start drawing on a square piece of paper and just see where it goes. I will do this in class and if I like it come up during Friday club block and work on it some more.
